Vitamins
And Depression
Author: Tim Whiston
It
has been proven that a healthy intake of the B Group vitamins
can prevent depression, and even alleviate existing symptoms of
depression in some cases. This article will list the compounds
from the B Group, and illustrate the role they can play in prevention
and treatment of depression in some individuals.
Vitamin B1:
Also known as thiamine, this vitamin is crucial to the conversion
of glucose into energy. A deficiency of this energy can lead to
mood swings, fatigue, irritability, depression and anxiety.
Vitamin B3:
Deficiencies of Vitamin B3, which is also called niacin, can lead
to anxiety and general irritability. This form of Vitamin B is
vital to a healthy nervous system.
Vitamin B5:
Vitamin B5, or pantothenic acid, is needed for the creation of
vital hormones as well as the absorption of amino acids. Not getting
enough Vitamin B5 can certainly lead to various forms of depression.
Vitamin B6:
This form of Vitamin B is required for the production of dopamine,
serotonin and melatonin. These three elements are all directly
related to brain function, and if an individual is deficient in
B6, production of these chemicals can be affected which can directly
lead to depression.
There are
other forms of Vitamin B, including folic acid and Vitamin B12.
These vitamins
also play a role in the prevention and treatment of depression.
It is highly recommended that individuals who are concerned about
depression and stress be sure to include ample servings of all
B vitamins within their diet.
If you're
suffering from depression or anxiety, talk to your doctor about
Vitamin B and whether or not you're getting the amount you need.
B vitamins can be depleted by many different factors, such as
a high sugar intake, drug use, and high stress levels. Changing
your diet or taking Vitamin B supplements could make a big difference.
Foods that
are rich in different types of Vitamin B include salmon, nuts,
whole wheat, leafy greens, milk, fish, chicken and eggs. And of
course there are many good supplements on the market that will
deliver a solid daily allowance of the B vitamin compounds.
