Someone is Using My Address to Spam! What Should I Do?

Have you received bounce-backs with your own email address in the 'from' address, but you certainly did not send that very inappropriate email to your list? Or has a subscriber or friend emailed you questioning Why you sent such an inappropriate email to him/her?

When this happens, it is Alarming, Nerve-Wracking, Disgusting, and Just Not Needed in the already massive problems burdened on good people by the immature, insensitive trouble-makers who waste their lives spamming!!
This very appalling action by trouble-makers is called "spoofing". And it is happening abundantly lately to millions of online users. It can ruin good reputations, cause the lose of subscribers who don't know that it is not from you-- and the list of damage goes on and on!

Spoofing is where a spammer takes a domain name and puts it in the header of the email. They do this so that when they send out spamming emails and the emails are bounced back, they do not go back to the spammer, but to the domain name that the troublemaker placed in the header -- YOUR email address!

What can be done about it??
The best way to combat this is with a SPF record on your domain.

Our hosting service, WestHost, explains it clearly:
"SPF (Sender Policy Framework) is an antispam technique that takes advantage of the fact that nearly all abusive e-mail messages use fake sender addresses. The technology helps mitigate spam by providing the world with a record of who is allowed to send mail from your domain. Mail servers that implement Sender Policy Framework check the source of each incoming message against the authoritative SPF record published by the sender's domain. If the source of the message is not listed in the SPF record, the message is treated as spam (generally, this means it will be directed to the recipient's Junk Mail folder).

As more and more mail servers implement the technique, SPF becomes a more effective antispam tool every day. Also, because spammers are less likely to spoof your email address if your domain has an SPF record, adding an SPF record to your domain will reduce or eliminate undeliverable errors/bounceback messages for mail that you did not send."

For more information on SPF, go to: www.openspf.org/Introduction

Ask your hosting service to install/implement the SPF Record on your website. Some control panels allow you to turn it on, however I suggest you definitely chat/talk with your hosting service technician in order to make sure it has been installed properly. Services vary, so be patient if it takes some time to propagate before you see results.

With hopes that you never get spoofed!
